Dog Wellness Exam - The Importance of Dog Wellness Exams For Your Pet's Health

How does dog wellness impact the longevity of my pet?

Wellness exams for dogs frequently help us assess any early changes they can be having. The biggest thing I see is slight weight gain. If we see your dog once and then years later, it can be a bigger issue before we can tackle it and get it under control.

How soon should I bring my pet in to see a veterinarian for a wellness exam?

Anytime you get a new pet to your home, bring it in and get a general checkup to ensure they're healthy, and then we can answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Will additional testing be needed beyond a wellness exam?

Typically, for annual exams, like vaccine appointments, we recommend heartworm testing annually, which also tests for any tick-borne diseases. It allows you to keep them and buy heartworm prevention, which I highly recommend in this area. We do see a lot of heartworm disease prevalent. It also helps with early screening and making sure they're generally healthy.

What are some dog wellness recommendations my vet is likely to make?

Like I said, heartworm testing. As your dog gets older, we typically recommend a senior wellness panel, which is a more comprehensive blood panel that assesses liver function, kidney function, and overall systemic health. If there are concerns about your dog's thyroid levels, we can test for that. It's tailored to your particular dog to make sure they're as healthy as they can be.

Why is early detection of health issues in my dog so important?

Earlier detection of health issues lets us mitigate and manage them earlier on. Whether that be making lifestyle changes, dietary recommendations, or things like that to tailor to your dog and ensure that we can get those health issues under control before they become bigger issues that we can't manage as readily.

Will my vet suggest allergy testing for my dog?

We do offer allergy testing here at Lowell Animal Hospital. I typically only recommend it for dogs where we cannot get their allergies under control with more basic therapies, whether environmental or food modifications. They're not responding to any of the medications we typically use for allergies, or it's a recurring issue that just keeps happening, and we can't get a good handle on it. At that point, I recommend allergy testing, but it's not my go-to number one step for most dogs that have allergies.
